New Zealand in May

As autumn draws to an end, the temperatures go down but so do the hotel prices. Which means May might be one of the best times to visit New Zealand. You can still enjoy the nature, but add a new layer to the clothes. And if you prefer to stay in the cities, it’s wonderful to go sightseeing. When it gets rainy or colder, hide in one of the museums.

Weather

May is the last month of autumn , but although the temperatures do go down compared to summer, the weather can be excellent. To add to this, some of the introduced trees into the local flora, change leaves so that the many colors make a lovely background for photos, especially in the Central Otago and Hawke’s Bay areas.
Autumn is one of the rainiest seasons so make sure to pack a waterproof jacket and appropriate shoes. And don’t forget the sweater and the jacket either.

Autumn is part of the shoulder season and one of the best times to travel to New Zealand when it comes to prices. Expect hotel rooms and hostel beds to be cheaper than during the summer.

When it comes to flights , the fares are lower than during the summer. Also, book your flight 4 to 6 weeks in advance, when you can find the best fares. And don’t forget to check the offers from various airlines into different cities.

Things to do

It might not be as warm as during the summer, but the daytime temperatures allow for sightseeing. So with a map in hand and appropriate clothing, stop by the Auckland Botanical Gardens or the Wellington Te Papa (National Museum). To travel between the two cities you can take the Overlander, which is a delight to experience during this time of the year.

If you enjoy nature, visit some of the country’s rarest species at the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. Here you can also take a scenic ride or visit a gold mine. Also you can explore the Wellington’s Waterfront but make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

For a more interesting scenic ride, take the Rainforest Express, which is close to Auckland . You’ll pass over valleys, see the ancient forest and see some of the most beautiful sighs in the country.

Also in Auckland you can climb the Harbour Bridge or visit one of the museums. For lovely views of the city , climb to the viewing platform of the Sky Tower. And should you visit the city on a rainy day, take the kinds to Auckland Zoo.

In Wellington, get to one of the lookout points: Mount Victoria, Mount Kaukau, or the Brooklyn Mill.
