Getting from Auckland to Bay of Islands (and return)

Kerikeri Airport serves the Bay of Islands and receives only flights from Auckland (Air New Zealand) and Whangarei (Salt Air). There are 5 flights per day from Auckland to Kerikeri and the first one is at 8:35 a.m. The flight time is 40 minutes and the single ticket costs NZ$194.

Buses from Auckland to the Bay of Islands

InterCity Coachlines operates buses from Auckland to Paihia five times a day, with the first departure being at 8:30 a.m. The travel time is between 3h 45 min and 6 h, depending on the type of bus. The single fare starts at NZ$26.

Driving from Auckland to the Bay of Islands

You can rent a car and drive the 228 km between Auckland and Paihia in about 3 hours. Please note that you’ll be driving on partial toll roads. Part of the road runs by the coast so you’ll be rewarded with superb scenery.
