South Island

South IslandSouth Island is slightly cooler than North Island but offers equally interesting locations. The Southern Alps are the island’s backbone. Beautiful and sandy beaches, interesting fiords, large forests, all are waiting for the tourists.

Sometimes referred to as the “Mainland”, South Island is larger than North Island but has fewer people. The most important cities on the South Island are: Christchurch – the largest city with a rather English feel to it -, Dunedin – the oldest city in New Zealand -, Invercargill and Nelson.

Get in

The biggest international airport on the South Island is located in Christchurch. There are several other towns that receive regular domestic flights, as well as regular flights from Australia.

Ferries connect the North Island to the South Island. The journey takes between 3 and 3 ½ hours, depending on the weather conditions.

Once in one of the towns, you can explore the region by train, by bus or by rented car.
