Why You Should Add Christchurch to Your Round the World Trip

New Zealand is one of those destinations, particularly for Americans, that seems like a dream to visit. It’s so far away that sometimes it doesn’t seem like a realistic place to travel to, particularly if you only have one or two weeks to do it. You’ll spend 2-4 days simply getting to and from New Zealand, and with so much to see and do and the expense of getting there, that might not seem like a smart move. Round the world trips are gaining more and more popularity, and if you are one of the lucky ones planning a RTW trip, you should think about adding New Zealand to that itinerary.

If you do add New Zealand, you’ll probably find your way to Christchurch at some point. Christchurch would be a great addition to any RTW trip. It’s the largest city on the South Island and would make a great base for exploration. Travelers will have plenty of options when visiting Christchurch as they can hop on one of the many tourist buses on offer or rent their own wheels to explore. One of the most beautiful drives I’ve ever been on anywhere in the world leaves from Christchurch – the Inland Scenic Route – so if you have the funds to rent your own car or camper van for a bit, this would be a great place to start.

While the city itself is nice and worth at least a few days, there are plenty of great areas just a short drive away. Swim with the dolphins in nearby Kaikoura. Head south to Queenstown for some hair-raising adventure activities. Head across to the west coast of the island and check out Franz Josef or Fox Glaciers. Or head north for some wine tasting and more beautiful scenery. There’s no doubt that New Zealand, and particularly its south island, have some of the most beautiful landscapes the world has to offer, and if you can add this country to your trip itinerary, you won’t be sorry.
